While most people understand the value of preventative maintenance, it can often be difficult to remember the details and to schedule the appropriate work. Unfortunately, this can lead to issues or a failure, and this can often come at the most inappropriate time. For example, you may be getting ready for work, find that you have no hot water and realise that this may be an issue with your tank itself. What could be going wrong here, and what should you do next?

Wear and Tear

Your electric water heater may appear to be a relatively simple device, but there are still a number of components within that will need regular maintenance. As they will have to deal with the quality of the supplied water, some issues can build up over time, and if so, certain parts of the system may begin to deteriorate and will eventually fail.

Problem Areas

The heating element, in particular, is especially vulnerable, as minerals and deposits can build up as time goes by. The tank may also be equipped with a sacrificial anode rod, and this is designed to corrode before any of the other elements in order to safeguard the operation. From time to time.  this rod will disintegrate and should be replaced, or other parts of the tank will be next in line.

Of course, it is possible that the thermostat device has failed, and if so, this is a relatively simple fix in and of itself. A replacement may ensure that the water can once again heat up to the required temperature so that you can enjoy your early morning shower.

Advance Warning

In the future, be on the lookout for anything unusual, and in particular, a strange smell or an odd sound. When sediment builds up to a certain extent, it may affect the quality of the water, and you may notice a peculiar smell when you run the tap. Strange sounds can be caused by an excessive amount of sediment, and if you notice too many of these, then it is a sign that you need to schedule a service right away.

Scheduling a Fix

Talk with your electrician as soon as you can, and they will be able to schedule an appointment. They'll then be able to repair or replace the appropriate parts so that you can get your life back to normal.

Just remember to make a note of any future service dates so that you don't run into this problem again. Keep up with hot water maintenance to prevent breakdowns.
